Death of Rev. O.J. Holtan
On Saturday evening, August 3, occurred the death of Rev. Ole J. Holtan at his home several miles south of town. Mr. Holtan had been in poor health the past year and suffered very much from cancer of the stomach and kidney trouble, which was the cause of his death.
Rev. Holtan was born in Norway fifty-seven years ago and was educated in the best schools of that country before coming to the United States. He was ordained as a Norwegian Lutheran minister in Red Wing, Minn., from which city he came to New England about three years ago to take charge of the Norwegian Lutheran congregation in the New England territory. He filed on a homestead south of town and was active in his church until a few months ago when he was compelled on account of poor health to give up a part of his work.
Besides a wife, Rev. Holtan is survived by three daughters and three sons. All have the sincere sympathy of the entire community in their bereavement.
The funeral was held at the Holtan home on Wednesday afternoon, five Norwegian Lutheran ministers in the southwestern part of the state officiating. The funeral was very largely attended, there being over forty teams in the procession from the house to the Hjort cemetery, where burial was made.
